STOW FUN RAISERS OVER THE LAST YEAR

 2016/2017

After a very successful quiz in February 2016, the next event was the family bike ride and BBQ in June. 32 cyclists enjoyed a gentle ride along the back roads and farm track, with a larger crowd gathering to sit and chat on the green as copious amounts of sausages, burgers and cakes were consumed, washed down by tea, coffee & cold drinks.

In October we liaised with WLDC to borrow gloves, picking sticks & Hi-Viz vests and had our first community litter pick. Although a number of residents of the village have been doing a great job individually at picking the MacDonalds/ Burger King/ KFC bags and other frequently seen rubbish from verges, the community litter pick showed just how much litter is thrown onto our roadsides. The sun shone and it was a lovely sociable afternoon out in the fresh air. The 9 helpers picked up 20 bags of bottles, cans, cigarette packets, sandwich wrappers, fast food chain meal bags/polystyrene containers/ sauce packets, hair rollers, a dummy, paper bags, a smashed mirror, a squashed road sign, part of a car bumper & wing mirror, polystyrene cups, crisp packets, juice cartons, a tarpaulin. We also saved a little toad stuck inside a crisp packet! It was made even more sociable by the provision of a hot drink and cakes in Anne Taylor’s warm kitchen afterwards!

The Christmas tree – which had been selected in advance, and was generally agreed as being a good shape and size – was erected on the green on 3rd December.

It was great to see so many villagers gathered round the tree on 19th December, to join in the singing of carols & Christmas songs, accompanied by the Willingham Band, and warmed by mince pies, hot drinks & soft drinks. We collected donations for St Barnabas Hospice and David Justham sent them a cheque for £90.

In February 2017 we had our annual Quiz night in the refurbished Cross Keys. The evening was sold out once again and was as enjoyable as ever.

We hosted another community litter pick on 2nd April, which was as ‘successful’ as the previous one, with over 20 bags of rubbish being collected. More volunteers than before came along and it is intended to have at least 2 sessions each year.

On Sunday 23rd April, we brought the very talented ‘Oxford Concert Party’ to Sturton Village Hall as part of the Village Hall touring scheme. The evening was well attended, showing how popular these opportunities to see national entertainers in our villages are.

We made a donation to the charity Lindap in January.

All that Stow Fun Raisers committee members do, is only possible with the co-operation and help of many other residents, the owners of the Cross Keys, the PCC and the parish council. All the cakes that are baked and donated, the use of a room at the pub for our committee meetings, the use of the Church toilets for the bike ride & BBQ, the help from Charlie Marshall erecting the Christmas tree and the kind donation of the electricity for the refreshments in the bus shelter at the carols by the family who live adjacent to it, the funding from the parish council for the tree and towards the lights on it, all add together to make the Stow Fun Raisers events a very well supported, enjoyable and important part of Stow community spirit.

We hope to join with the local history society to host a Talk Night with Lois Fenn on 1st October, but first there is the bike ride on 18th June, which we hope as many villagers as possible will attend.

A successful litter pick

A big thank you to everyone who came along today in the glorious sunshine to help pick a total of 22 bags of rubbish, plus various parts of a car! Similarly large ‘thank yous’ to those who provided the cake, hospitality & hot drinks afterwards. It was a fun and very productive afternoon – a real community event in that it has cleaned the verges of the village and proved a very sociable afternoon.
